Ashka Goradia

Tv Actress Ashka Goradia

A quick glance at the picture alongside and you probably won’t recognise her. Aashka Goradia, best remembered as Kumud from the Sony daily Kkusum, is on a major reinvention trip.

Feel good

The dukhyari image of Kkusum’s daughter, Kumud, has been traded in for a mod, new self. “I am looking at a new me,” says the actress. “I have been on a major diet and gym routine since the last few months. I have knocked off several inches. In fact, in the past year, I was determined to shed weight and revamp myself. I take care to dress well — my mantra is, look good, feel good.”

New role

Now that Kkusum is done and over with, Aashka wants to move on to new assignments. “I am looking at doing all kinds of characters,” says Aashka, who now features in the Zee daily, Piya Ka Ghar, as the tawaif, Chandni. “I have been dancing for hours at a stretch. There is this mujra number I have done on Maar daala, from Devdas — it is a far cry from my Kumud image.”

How easy is dancing, as compared to acting? “Tiring,” she says. “The Piya Ka Ghar production team is happy with my steps. My character of Chandni has a dual personality. At the kotha, Chandni is at her foul best; otherwise, she is her demure self.”

Birthday bumps

Incidentally, Aashka celebrated her birthday last Sunday. “It was a working birthday for me. I was shooting till late afternoon, and celebrated with Rohit Roy and Manasi Joshi Roy. They mean a lot to me, especially Manasi.

They had shifted to their new home the same day. I cut a cake at their new house, almost at midnight. Then, all of us — Rohit, Manasi and my two other friends — went out for dinner at a Bandra nightspot. It was a very quiet affair. At least I was with people who matter to me the most.”

Big screen plans

At the moment Aashka is looking for more roles. “I want to do more television, but my ultimate dream is films,” she says, while waiting for that big break.

Aashka facts

1. Made her television debut with Acting Acting (SAB TV).
2. Featured in Achanak 37 Saal Baad (Sony) and Bhabhi (Star Plus).
3. Is best remembered for her role as Kumud in Kkusum (Sony). She entered the show post the generation leap in 2003.
4. Did cameos in Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai (Sony) and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (Star Plus).
5. Is from Ahmedabad.
6. Has participated in stage shows in the US and Canada.
7. Says that she converted to Islam in 2002 after a spiritual experience

Model, Mridula Chandrashekhar on Skin Care

Mridula Chandrashekhar on Skin Care

Model Mridula Chandrashekhar created waves at the Lakme India Fashion Show and is a favourite with shutterbugs from around the country. She has done fashion shots with some of the top designers and fashion publications. Mridula believes she’s genetically gifted.

As a rule: I never use any creams or moisturisers. Everytime I think my skin needs nourishment, I rub some coconut oil. It is a magic potion.

I avoid: All kinds of facials, clean up, massages and bleaches. Instead of helping my skin they just pack it with boils and rashes.

Favourite beauty product: I invest in good cosmetics, therefore it’s either Channel, Bobby Brown, Mac or our Indian Cryoline.

Favourite lipstick shades: Oh! I am very girlie, I just love pink and wear it most of the time. If I am required to wear a darker shade, I usually go for plum reds, wine maroons and soft pink-browns.

Can’t do without: The cheek stainer I have. It’s by Body Shop. A blush-like thing it’s watery; something like beetroot juice. It gives you a very natural look.

Naturotheraphy: Neem packs. That’s the only skin care product I used. Otherwise I consider myself genetically blessed.

Tapur Chatterjee on Looks

One of the most important things is your looks. No, this does not mean that you have to be a Greek God ? just looking presentable is enough. Model Tapur Chatterjee feels that since the first impression is usually the last impression, it?s important to be dressed appropriately. ?You don?t have to be dressed in brands, just a simple shirt and jeans would do,? she says. One thing that completely turns her off is tight-fitting t-shirts, especially when worn by men who don?t have a great body. ?Why can?t men simply wear a shirt!? she exclaims.

Vidisha Centofanti

Vidisha Centofanti

On her first modelling experience...

Vidisha: I have been working for six years now. Prasad Bidapa (the Bangalore-based fashion guru) saw me at a party and thought I had it all right to be a model. My mother felt I should give it a shot. I did, and here I am.

On grooming schools for aspiring models...

Vidisha: They prepare you for the gruelling life ahead.

The success formula...

Vidisha: Good height, great figure and plenty of hard work. And of course, the X factor that makes you tick!

A model's life span...

Vidisha: As long as your face looks good!

Time to chill out means...

Vidisha: Travelling and reading. "Life of Pi" is what's holding my interest right now.

Life after modelling...

Vidisha: I love Mathematics. I think I might get an MBA degree. I might move to Australia, where my husband Darren Centofanti (a fashion photographer) is based. Or films, perhaps. I'd love to work with Mani Ratnam and the Bhatt family.

On herhusband

Vidisha: Darren and I fight all the time, especially since there are too many cultural differences. But what matters is, we understand each other perfectly.

The Very Sexy Urmila Matondkar

The daughter of a lecturer, actress Urmila Matondkar began her celluloid career as a child artiste with the film Kalyug (1980). Although an average film at the box-office, her next film, Masoom (1983), about a family coping with an illegitimate member, showed her acting talents blossom and she received critical acclaim from both her fans and the film fraternity. She subsequently appeared in a number of films including Dacait (1987), where she plays Sunny Deol's under-aged sister who gets brutally raped.

Years later, Urmila then made her debut as an adult actress in N. Chandra's Narasimha (1991) opposite Sunny Deol . She then did the fantasy Chamatkar (1992/I) with the then-débutant Shahrukh Khan and Shreemaan Aashique (1993), a comedy on male chauvinism opposite Anupam Kher and Rishi Kapoor and a crime movie Drohi (1992), But no matter what films she did, while her fellow actresses Manisha Koirala and Raveena Tandon reached the peak of their popularity with blockbuster after blockbuster, success seemed to elude her.

Then she did Ram Gopal Varma's Rangeela (1995), a tale of a girl's journey in the film industry. The movie came as a refreshing surprise and Urmila gave a magnificent performance, which is no small feet alongside actors Aamir Khan and Jackie Shroff, but what gave the film classic status was A.R. Rahman's music, Asha Bhosle's songs and designer Manish Malhotra, who transformed Urmila from a Maharashtrian middle-class girl into a sexy and glamorous actress. With this movie Urmila revolutionized sensuality on the Indian screen. What most actresses hadn't managed even after a dozen hits, Urmila had achieved with only one film. And ever since, she has been associated with Asha Bhosle's sensual voice and of course the image of the sizzling seductress - in fact, she is still known for her sizzling sensuality and her stunning looks.

However, Urmila is not to be judged only for her looks. She is also an actress of great talent and skill - her performance in Satya (1998) as a modest girl whose boyfriend, the titular character, gets sucked into the Bombay underworld is one of her best ever performances to date. And since 2000, she began to play roles of depth and substance, making an impact most notably in the films Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya (2001), Om Jai Jagadish (2002), Pinjar (2003), a drama based on India's partition, Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara (2005), about a man accused of Gandhi's murder and Ek Dhun Banaras Kee (2006).

As of 2006, she has acquired several assignments, both using her talents as an actress and as a seductress - she is doing Onir's Bas Ek Pal (2006) and Ram Gopal Varma's Sholay (2006), the latter of which audiences are eagerly waiting for with bated breath...

Today Urmila is known as one of Bollywood's most versatile actresses. After Sridevi, she is known to have the played the most varied characters next to fellow actresses Tabu and Mahima Chaudhry.

Power Woman - Ekta Kapoor

Ektaa Kapoor is the public face and creative director of Balaji Telefilms, who produces a vast array of TV serials with "riveting plots" that have propelled the company to the top of the television ratings.

She is the daughter of Jeetendra Kapoor, the actor and director who owns the company with his family. At the age of 25, she was listed in Asiaweek's top 50 list of young entrepreneurs. She was listed in Mid-Day's 2003 list of 50 most powerful people in the media.

Her serials -- Kyonki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, and Kusum all begin with the letter K because of her astrologer's advice.

Niharika Singh - Why Isnt She In Bollywood Yet ???

Niharika Singh calls herself a "camera baby", and looking at luminescent Miss India Earth, it is not difficult to guess why the camera loves her. "I am too short (5' 5.5") for the ramp," she says with a rueful smile. "That is why I have always been on camera!"

And nobody is complaining. She has graced the telly with music videos for Lata Mangeshkar, Jagjit Singh and Babul Supriyo apart from commercials for Milk and Roses soap, Sony Wega, Samsung and Asian Paints.

Though Niharika, a Virgo, wishes she were "more focussed like Leos", there seems to be nothing directionless about her life. "I needed to be independent. I started modelling after my 12th Standard (which she passed with 82 per cent) in my hometown in Dehradun. I moved to Delhi and worked there and then moved to Mumbai when I was 20. When I told my parents that I wanted to move to Mumbai, they were a little worried but were thoroughly supportive. I have been working in Mumbai for the past three years. My sister, who is studying, stays with me. I take care of home, cook and do everything. The feeling of independence is something else."

Niharika has a "why not" attitude to the Bollywood-beauty queen connection. "I am very particular about what I do. I would not do something just because it is the in thing. I did not do sleazy music videos when that was the norm. So I would like to do something meaningful in films. I am a total film buff and watch movies every Friday — first day, last show. I like movies to be entertaining. I do not see how a woman coming out of the sea in a bikini is entertaining and there is no way I would do something like that. I am very scrupulous about the products I endorse — if I were to endorse tobacco, then tomorrow there will be people who will feel it is okay because I am doing it."

An avid reader, Niharika insists: "Ayn Rand helped me win the crown. The question was which is my favourite book and I said Fountainhead. I love the book for its philosophy. At present I am reading Monica Ali's Brick Lane."

Niharika feels the seamy side to the beauty business, where you have a Kate Moss snorting coke, exists only in the international scene. "Modelling in India is still rooted in tradition. Here modelling means wearing beautiful Ritu Kumar or Tarun Tahiliani creations or doing some cute soap or cosmetics ad where you look pink and pretty and hold a flower. I don't think drugs is there in the modelling scene in India and hope it never comes in." We shall not talk about a certain Mr. Bidappa!

While commenting that modelling is not a high-pressure career, Niharika insists: "The competition is fierce. Everyone thinks this is a very glamorous profession. Hey, working out two hours a day is not glamorous! Nor is subsisting on salads and soup so cool. It is hard work and there are zillion models waiting to step into your shoes so you should always be on your toes."

Niharika's beauty secrets are exercising when she can. "I do not diet. That is one thing I learnt during the one-month training for Miss India. You need to eat to have the energy to burn the fat. You have to eat well to stay fit." Just pass the double cheeseburger!

To those in the State capital who have endured bone-rattling potholes on our many roads to hell and done Rip Van Winkle waits at traffic jams, Niharika's kind words about Bangalore would come as a shock — and that's an understatement. Niharika clarifies: "Believe me, if you come from Uttranchal and Mumbai, Bangalore's roads seem like paradise!"

We take your word for that, lovely lady!

Superhottie Supermodel Diandra Soares

>

Height: 5 feet 10 inches

Weight: 50 kilos

Measurements: 35-25-35

Her diet: I eat everything. I don't try to avoid any particular kind of food. If I feel I have put on weight, I don't have rice in the night. But that is about it.

She has a weakness: For deep-fried food and sweets. I have a sweet tooth. I love everything from ice creams to mousses to fruit custards to Indian sweets.

Breakfast: Is the most important meal of the day. Even if I wake up at 1 pm, I have breakfast. I usually have eggs or cornflakes with a lot of fruits and fruit juices.

Lunch: Is usually very light. Some rice or a chappati with vegetables and something non-vegetarian.

She eats: 6-7 meals through the day.

Her fitness regimen: With my kind of schedule, I don't get to go to the gym often. Off-season, I go thrice a week for an hour everyday. I don't have any fixed schedule when I am exercising. I just do whatever I feel my body needs at that point in time.

Yoga: Is something I used to do regularly. I feel there are many parts of our body that don't get worked out in the gym. Yoga helps strengthen those parts of the body.

Her skincare routine: Is a clean-up once in three months. I don't have a skincare routine as such. I use creams as when I think my skin needs repair. I use a lot of natural products on my skin. I also drink a lot of water through the day.

Her secret recipe for glowing skin: Mix milk and salt and rub it on your skin. It hydrates the skin and gives it a glow. Or rub raw papaya to get soft, smooth, blemish free skin.

When not modelling or partying: I read. I like the John Grisham kind of stuff. I also read on books about the afterlife. I sketch. I love doing sketches of shoes, garments and anything related to fashion. I shop. I like to spend time with my friends.

What you didn't know about her: I love to design shoes. My first collection of shoes was shown at the Lakme India Fashion Week this year at Tarun Tahiliani's show.

The one thing she loves about herself: I can smile even if I am messed up in my head. I am very chirpy and chatty and that is not something you will find in a lot of models in the industry.

What she still wants to achieve: I want to work in movies. Not stupid, run-of-the-mill Bollywood ones but some intelligent movies. I would like to model abroad which I am doing a little bit of now. I am going to the Miami Fashion Week. I want to be a stylist. I want to be a shoe designer. You name it in the creative front and I want to try it and tap into it.

Indian Model Sheetal Menon

Here’s another weekly treat for our readers. Short of their vital stats, we’re telling you some super-interesting things about Indian fashion’s hottest models. And better still, we’re throwing in a ringside view to these ramp scorchers. Closer than most will ever get. Go ahead. Say you love us!

SHE IS: Sheetal Menon (though a numerologist has suggested she add a ‘T’ between her first and last name)

BACK TO THE BASICS: Because her father was in the Army, Sheetal has lived all over the country. Her most recent move has been from Nashik to Mumbai, where she currently lives with her mother.

YEARS ON THE RAMP: 2

THE ASSIGNMENT SHE’D MOST LIKE TO TOM-TOM: Bagging a spot in the Kingfisher Swimsuit Calendar 2005. And as you can see, she has good reason to be happy with that shoot…

RAMP CATASTROPHE: Sheetal’s catwalk debut was made at Lakmé India Fashion Week in 2003. “It was really chaotic. LIFW is hard work, involves sometimes up to four shows a day and many, many changes. I was part of Aki Narula’s show and I refused to go up twice, because I was convinced the outfits would fall off,” says Sheetal. “It’s not my proudest moment as a model!”

IF SHE WEREN’T A MODEL: Then perhaps she would explore a career as a classical dancer.

THE NEXT STEP: She is already doing an acting course with Anupam Kher, so films are her future.

Sheetal Menon is all set to follow the time-honored corridor of Ramp to acting.

Supermodel Sheetal Menon is making his debut through ‘Bhram’, which has two more models Dino Morea and Milind Soman in it, along with them are some established names in acting arena like Simone Singh and Chetan Hansraj.

Bhram is fabrication of Magna Films, directed by Pavan Kaul, Screenpaly has been given by Bhavani Iyer and music by famous music composer Pritam.

Shooting of this film has started and is due for release by this year end

Bigg Boss Contestant (Big Brother Indian Version) & Supermodel Carol Gracias

Bigg Boss Contestant (Big Brother Indian Version) & Supermodel Carol Gracias

Censored 'Bigg Boss' puts off viewers

NEW DELHI: It has gossip, romance and drama, but India's prudish version of the worldwide hit reality show Big Brother has few takers on prime-time television long dominated by cat-fight soap operas.

The show went on air this month with 13 Bollywood film wannabes and has-been models, including a former Mr India, with the same format - but much less skin and scandal - as the international versions.

The series, called Bigg Boss here, will track participants over 100 days during which they are locked in a house and cut off from the outside world, with the television audience voting out one contestant each week. The last one standing takes home 500,000 rupees ($11,200; BD4,226).

The first episode was watched by fewer than three per cent of Hindi-language viewers among the nearly 62 million Indian households with cable television - a paltry share compared to the 11.4pc share notched by the top soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.

According to TAM Media Research agency, the first episode of Bigg Boss ranked 22 among prime-time Hindi entertainment programmes - mainly soaps revolving around two women scheming to woo the same man.

"These ratings are quite low, especially for a new show for which there normally is far more buzz," said Ashutosh Bhagat of media buying agency Mindshare India.

The show is seen as a bellwether for advertisers who want to reach more than half of the 1.1 billion population who are under 25, said media consultant Praveen Tripathi, chief executive of Hansa Consulting.

As in other versions of Big Brother, shown so far in around 70 countries, in the show's second week romance is already brewing, but contestants are unlikely to be shown taking showers or having sex.

"We will respect the stars' privacy in the bathroom. We are not going to show any explicit footage or go live with uncensored version," said Rajesh Kamat, managing director of Endemol India, the show's producer. Bigg Boss producers, however, said the edited version of their show will not disappoint voyeuristic viewers. "Aryan Vaid has been quite touchy-feely of late," said Kamat, referring to the former Mr India who appears to be trying to woo starlet Anupama Verma.

Among others on the show are Bollywood siren Rakhi Sawant - known for her raunchy dance numbers in B-grade films. Also on the show is model Carol Gracias who hit headlines this year when her bustier fell off and exposed her breasts at a fashion show.

Binal Trivedi - Finalist Contestant for the Femina Look of the Year 1997 Contest and Leading Indian Model

Binal Trivedi - Finalists Contestant for the Femina Look of the Year 197 Contest and Leading Model , Elder sister of ram scorcher Pia Trivedi.

Pia Trivedi

Pia Trivedi underwent speech therapy

Problem : Pia wanted to be a VJ, but her voice was too flat. VJs have to sound peppy for an entire hour, which she couldn't get herself to do.
Solution : Just eight days of training helped her and now is now quite a successful VJ.

TIPS FOR GOOD VOICE

Drink plenty of water
Do deep breathing exercises, like pranayam, every day
Refrain from smoking (many actors smoke to get a low pitch voice like Mr. Bachchan's. They don't realise that the time they reach his age, they won't have a voice left at all)
Do not travel by two wheelers or auto rickshaws if you can avoid it, as you end up breathing the maximum dust and smoke this way and that does a lot of harm to your voice
Fish and honey are both good for your voice. Eat them as often as you can

Rachel Maria Byros

Banglore Based Model Rachel Maria Byros

Rachel Maria Bayros is gorgeous, unaffected and totally stunning. Her skin is flawless and she dimples prettily in welcome. Definitely the face of 2004 in Bangalore. To quote our very own fashion guru, Prasad Bidapa, “Rachel is a face that is going places today.” And, if Prasad believes that then everyone takes notice.
Chatting in Barista on St. Mark’s Road, Rachel comes across as a down to earth girl who has just turned 20. She comes from a “supportive family, happy with my success.” Her mother and brother are there for her emotionally, but she takes her own decisions, especially when it comes to work. She learnt to be independent from the time she was a child. Though it was tough, it has helped her to differentiate between right and wrong. Her mother is a nursery school teacher in the PTA School, Jayanagar. After her second year in Christ College, she quit to start modelling full time. Now she pursues her studies via correspondence through the IGNOU.

“I have no role model. However, models Carol Gracias and Ujjwala Raut are definitely people I look up to. Carol’s skin, body structure, everything about her is totally admirable. Ujjwala has made it big abroad and that’s what I am aiming for,” she says, very confidently adding, “ I want to hit the international scene, not just the national one.”

The glamour world has always interested Rachel. “Right from the time I was a kid, I always loved to dress and apply makeup. My break came when I got my portfolio done in Mumbai. This was after I won a first runners up in a small show two and a half years ago. I had no godfather and have worked very hard to get where I am. I just watched and learnt from senior models. I started work showing collections with Rahul Dev Shetty, who I still work with. Then, one year ago, Prasad took me on,” she reveals. After that there has been no looking back for Rachel and her appointment book is filled up these days.

The going has not always been easy. “I can’t believe I am the same girl when I look at my old photos,” says the pretty Cancerian, adding, “I am lucky I don’t need to diet to keep my figure. I am naturally very slim but I do work out at home to tone my body and keep fit. I’m a music and dance person so aerobics are just perfect for me.”

Rachel’s advice to all those aspiring young models out there is, “believe in yourself and have the passion of your conviction and only then things will happen for you.”
