Parmita Katkar - Hotting it up

The cool showers notwithstanding, temperatures are on the rise in Lokhandwala. That’s because the locality houses Parmita Katkar, one of the four finalists in AXN’s Hot ‘N’ Wild contest.

After an elimination round held on Aug 2 at Velocity, this 23-year-old resident of Fourth Cross Lane was chosen from among 1,800 contestants for the finals, which will be held in Mumbai.

Winners of the contest will be cast as show hosts on AXN. Says a thrilled Parmita, “The contest is not just about having a great body — and it’s certainly not brainless. It was an out-and-out speech contest. The channel wants to find hot-looking hosts who can speak well.”

She claims that her “easy demeanour and witty answers” worked in her favour during the two-round elimination process. “There were so many questions, and though they seemed quite easy they were actually quite difficult.
Like judge Achla Sachdev asked me that if I had to go to a bar and find an exciting guy, what would my pick-up line be? It had to be intelligent, witty and hot. I looked at Milind Soman, who was also a judge, and said, 'That’s a nice shirt you are wearing. But it would look nice on the carpet next to my bed.’ Achla wasn’t satisfied with that, she asked me for another line. So I said, ‘Nice pants; can I talk you out of them?’”

That’s quite a mouthful. Weren’t her parents worried about the connotations of participating in such a hot show?

“My mother was skeptical after she saw Are You Hot, the American reality show that this series is based on. But I reassured her that the Indian competition was not going to be like the American one and that I will not have to wear a bikini on stage.”

Personally, she isn’t too worried about being labelled hot and wild. “That’s just the name of the show; the contest is more about being yourself, and being a sexy compere. There is a very thin line between being sexy and vulgar and the organisers have maintained it very well.”

Right now, Parmita’s preparing for the finals, to be held on September 5, by mugging Oscar Wilde quotations and Cyrus Broacha’s one-liners.

“I am also preparing my expressions by checking them on my handycam,” she says. She’s planning to invest in some nice, hot designerwear “which is not revealing,” she adds.

AXN’s Hot and Wild contest is based on the controversial ABC television show Are You Hot, directed by reality TV expert Mike Fleiss (he created The Bachelor, where “one lucky man and 25 lucky women were given the unique opportunity to find true love”).

Are You Hot, a six-episode series, gave Americans who tuned in a chance to choose who will be the hottest man and woman in the nation.

A panel of celebrity judges — supermodel Rachel Hunter, fashion designer Randolph Duke and actor Lorenzo Lamas — offer their opinions, but don’t get to choose the winners. It’s the viewers who, after each episode, vote for their favourite male and female hotties by making toll-free phone calls.

Contestants are eliminated one by one until one man and one woman remain, to be crowned the “The Sexiest People in America.”
The show ran into some rough weather, with American radio producer Howard Stern suing ABC and Are You Hot producers claiming they stole the idea from his radio programme, which ruined his own TV deal. He is seeking US$100 million in damages.

If that’s not bad enough, the show’s TRPs didn’t exactly set the channel on fire. Which is probably why it’s been cancelled after its first season.

According to a Reuters report, the chairman of ABC’s entertainment division said the show was dropped from the summer schedule because “ultimately — it was in bad taste”.
