Tinu Verghese, won the much coveted fashion television award for the World's Best Ramp Model in Monte Carlo 2003 . This malyalee model has walked the ramp in Milan and Paris for international fashion houses like Christian Lacroix, Gucci and DKNY.
A few months ago she started a models' union - Models United - and all the top models in India signed up. The idea was to protect models in a sometimes-abusive environment. She tried to bring her fraternity together to form a union of models to ensure basic rates and more and more professional handling of contracts and payments. But she had to drop the idea as it was affecting her career. “I think I just want to leave that and not talk about it right now,” she adds.
Can she compare the life of a model in Europe as to one in Mumbai? “It is more professional in Europe and in every show I get to see different models, while in Mumbai, it is the same faces at every other show,” says Tinu who, besides Ujjwala Raut, is the only desi model working in Europe.
