Shweta Kawatra

She is one of the more striking looking vamps of tellytown. Vamp is unfair, as she quit Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and Kkusum where she played the bad woman with gusto.

It takes considerable courage to leave such hugely popular shows and it is a tribute to the actress that she did it. Since then, she has not been seen on TV. Until now. She is back in full force with C.I.D. Special Bureau (Sony) and you can also see her host Current Bollywood (Max), Crime & Punishment (Sahara Samay Rashtriya) and Good Morning Bollywood (Sahara One). No prizes for guessing that we speak of Shweta Kawatra.

One of the reasons you saw little of her on TV, is that she had pursued her Bollywood dreams. She was in the critically acclaimed My Brother Nikhil. However, that wasn’t the reason for her break from television ‘‘I wanted a break. I wanted to grow as an actress. I wanted to do something that I hadn’t done before. So I needed time,’’ says Shweta. So here she is. Playing the very serious Dr.Niyati Pradhan, a forensic scientist in CID. A very different role from what she’s done before in Kahani... and Kkusum. Also she has a different look. Minus the sarees, sindoor and bindis you see her wearing a very stern expression which means business. ‘‘Niyati is a professional — very straightforward. When she is not working she is the regular girl next door though I don’t know how much of that you will see. But I like the character. The look of Dr Niyati was the channel’s effort though her spectacles were my idea,’’ explains Shweta.

The actress is enjoying the shows she anchors — Current Bollywood and Good Morning Bollywood, film based shows and Crime & Punishment is serious stuff as it deals with real life stories. ‘‘It’s good fun doing these shows,’’ she says. So that makes it four shows on air.

There is more for hardcore fans of this pretty actress. Soon you will also see her in a daily called Rang which should hit Zee TV sometime next month. It’s a love triangle — she plays a music composer who falls in love with a singer from a small town whose career she launches. However, the guy is in love with another girl. ‘‘It’s a good show and my character is very interesting. I am looking forward to doing something interesting with husband Manav Gohil whom you see in CID and recently had a CID Special Bureau crossover. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any scene with him in that story. I would love to do something emotional with Manav’’.
