DJ Megha makes her music video debut !!

DJ Megha ..better known for us as model Megha Kawale cut out an album & a music video to go along with it. Her choice of song for the music video is one of my favorite tracks , a song which we dont just like to hear but loved to see it as well , who can forget the tantalizing Saira Banu's sizzling towel dance in Victoria 203 ??
Megha had it easy , she herself is no less an eyecandy than anyone but also got her model friends to star along in the video - Dipanita Sharma, Nina Manuel, Jesse Randhawa, Fleur Xavier , but im sure megha will be the first to accept that the video aint upto the mark , it looks like any other music video shot in a night club with some flashy cuts , more style than substance , a simpler idea would've been to do the number just like the original , pretty sure these lovely ladies doing the saira banu act would've pushed up the trp's.

Style Icon Nina Manuel

Nina has not only been a very successful model with having walked the ramp for all the best designers for over a decade now, but she also has become a very well known face on television. With indian tv exploring new avenues & lifestyle channels comming up (even zee trends has transformed into a lifestyle channel , hopefully we will get to see a lot more of dusky beauty nina on it) In the show she hosts midnite manuel / nina at nine / after hours , its her personality that really carries the shows through, her wit & sense of humor go a long way to make the shows what they are.
There are many models around , many walking the ramp from years but very few can qualify as a style icon when off it , nina is truly one of them.

Excerpts from an interview
Being chocolate-skinned...
I never faced any problem because I wanted to be a ramp model. Dark-skinned people always stand out on the ramp. On joining, I had set a time frame for myself. But things clicked for me soon.

Tennis is the most Fascinating sport: Nina Manuel

Tennis fascinates me the most. It is fast and the players are agile. Roger Federer and Andre Agassi are the players I love to watch. I love watching aquatics also. Matt Biondi, the shortest swimmer, is an interesting character in the pool.

The other game that I like is cricket. I watch only the One Day Internationals. I did watch a match in Mumbai. It was a One Day International between India and Pakistan. I met Mohammad Azharrudin and Yuvraj Singh there. They are nice people.

I like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Harbhajan Singh too. There is nothing personal about my liking but I’m really proud of these cricketers. I was an athlete during my school days but never participated in any competitions.

I played basketball a little. I have workouts at the gym regularly to stay fit. I have six workouts in a week. I don’t compromise on this schedule even if my schedule is tight.

Nina Manuel Interview back in 1999

Nina Manuel, who recently joined Channel [V]'s newest veejay list, tells Sujata Assomull she loves to watch TV, specially when she is on

# Another one bites the dust. Model Nina Manuel has also joined the ranks of clotheshorses who turn veejay.

In 1999, Nina joined Channel [V] as part of their revamp programme. Their latest veejay-purge had the music channel getting rid of most of their old faces -- from Suchitra Pillai to Sophiya Haque. The tried and tested were replaced with the brand new in a bid to pull in the age groups 14 to 25.

# As was this twentysomething -- who was lured into making a career change.

"I was called for a screen test. Till then, I had never thought of becoming a veejay. But I kept an open mind during the test." And her mindset obviously was the one that Channel [V] was looking for. Nina was selected from a long list of contenders.

# Being a known name in the glamour industry must have helped a little?

"I guess it must've helped, but I don't think that can get you the job. You need to be able to talk in front of the camera. The screen test is quite rigorous." But obviously the camera loved Nina as much as she loves the camera -- "I am thrilled with the job. It's great to see yourself on TV."

# And since she loves music, her job gets that much better.

"From Jennifer Lopez to Santana, I like all types of music."

# What about modelling -- Nina used to love that too? Is it curtains for the catwalk?

"I am still doing fashion shows. We normally get booked for shows three months in advance. I love the ramp -- it's so much fun as there are so many people involved."

# How does she honour all her commitments? Her diary seems really cramped.

"I am organised to the core. Though I am not sure how much free time I will have left when the fashion shows start this September."

# Which shows is she booked for?

"The Ensemble Show, Shahab Durazi and J J Vallaya's." She says she loves doing Rohit Balshows. "He is so creative. And he is a great person who is so much fun."

# So how does this ramp model keep her figure?

Believe it or not, as a child Nina was quite chubby. "I lost weight by working out. Exercise has become an important part of my life. I keep changing my routine and have tried everything from weights to aerobics. But Nina does not watch her diet and loves her mom's cooking. "She makes the best fish curry and rice."

# She sounds like quite a fitness fanatic, does she have any spare time for other hobbies?

"I got myself a computer last December and I have recently become addicted to the internet." She also likes to watch TV, which is just as well since she has become a part of the industry herself.

# How did Nina get her first break in to the competitive glamour industry?

It all began when she took part in the Look of the Year contest in 1995. And though Nina did not win, the contest proved to be the start of her modelling career. "Mehr Jessia saw meat the contest and asked me to take part in the Ensemble show."

# It must have been quite nerve-racking to take the ramp for such a prestigious show?

"I was really nervous." But it must not have shown. After that show, she was flooded with bookings. And since then, she has not looked back. She has done a music video for Remo. The sexy San Miguel ad. And an ad film for Lawman jeans.

# But like most dusky models, she finds it hard to get advertising work.

"I don't let that stop me -- I keep going for screen tests." Nina does not let anything get in her way. In the last four years -- while she was busy travelling around India with ramp shows -- she has managed to finish her Bachelor's degree and has even begun to study Law.

# She wants to be a lawyer?

She has completed two years of her course, but has not yet finished her final year. "But I will." And we believe her. She has already mastered the art of bypassing the truth. Ask Nina her age and she says: "If I tell you,I'll have to kill you."

Nina Manuel

Nina Manuel

She’s walked the ramp for über designers Suneet Verma, J.J. Valaya, and Raghvendra Rathore. First noticed in the ubiquituous San Migel advertisement, she won Female Model of the Year at India's Fashion Awards (called F Awards) last November. In a free wheeling interview with EGO, Nina speaks of law school, fashion and what it takes to be India's reigning supermodel. Excerpts:

You finished two years in Law College in Mumbai. How did a supermodel end up in law school?

Well, ever since I was a kid, I had looked upto my cousins and all of them were excellent lawyers. It was quite natural then that my parents and I both wanted me to be a lawyer back then. And I had always been very good with my studies and used to score high marks.

So when did you realize that law wasn’t your cup of tea?

I didn’t realize it, actually. Back in 1995, my mom saw an ad inviting applications for the Femina look of the year contest and encouraged me to participate in it. Though I didn’t win the contest, I was spotted by model Mehr Jessia. One thing followed another and as I started picking up lots of good work, modeling became too tempting to resist. Law had to be a natural casualty.

You went on to do everything from catwalks to advertising campaigns.

I started my career by doing a show for Ensemble, the haute couture store. It brought me in the limelight right therein and was noticed by all leading designers. After doing lots of ramp shows with a multitude of designers, I did modeling assignments with San Miguel, Bausch & Lomb, Levi's, Coke, Indian Express and Lawman Jeans.

The San Migel advertisement was really your big break in terms of getting national recognition. How did you snag that campaign?

As was the norm, I had distributed my pictures to various modeling agencies. One day, I received a call from Ad-Film Valas agency owned by the famous Kunal Kapoor. I was told that I had been shortlisted for the San Migel campaign. No screen test, no interviews and no questions asked.

Having walked the ramp with India's best designers, modeled for music videos and been a VJ for channel V, it would seem Bollywood should have been a natural transition for you.

Nothing in the sense of a wholesome role, some thing that I would love doing, has been offered to me as yet, though there have many offers. All-in-all I’ll direct my grey cells to ponder upon the issue only when there is a “complete” offer.

You were awarded the best female model at the F Awards for excellence in Indian fashion. What makes a model the kind of huge success story that you have become in the industry?

Many things go into making a good model. Being one of the best models in the country has not come easy to me. Lots of hardwork, regular grooming, hours at the gym are but only a few of the things that have gone into making me what I am today. One thing that has stood me in good stead is the fact that I have never felt insecure about anybody else. I really feel that insecurity is just a creation of ones mind.

After having tried the clothes for so many designers, you must have a few favorites.

Narendra Kumar, Shahab Durazi, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, Varun Behl, Manish Arora ... it's quite an exhaustive list and frankly, I don’t have any one favourite.

You have been a regular at the Lakme India Fashion Weeks. A lot of people think Indian fashion is ready to take on the West now.

I was at Milan Fashion Week and the stuff strutted by Indian designers generated a lot of excitement among the buyers there. So both the talent amongst Indian designers and the demand in the market has improved a lot. However, overall I feel that we are not there yet but give us another 7 - 8 years and we’ll be among the best.

Here at Lakme India Fashion Week, each year is getting better than the last. Designs are fresher and models are more professional. This year, I expect more earnings for the designers and models and a production befitting a world class fashion week.

What's in store for Nina Manuel in the future?

I am planning to buy and trade in womens and mens fashion. Of course, it's going to take some time and till then I'll continue in the entertainment industry. More modeling , more money, that's the mantra at the moment!
